Working with children and young people
Every young person arrives with their own experiences, worries and strengths, so I take time to understand what life feels like from their perspective. My aim when working with children and young people is for them to feel heard, understood and empowered. I want them to know the safe, calm and confidential space at Curlew Counselling is a space where they can express themselves freely and to help them understand their thoughts and feelings, for them to feel safe to explore these and to feel empowered and steadier in themselves.
I gently pace the sessions, which are shaped around their age, needs and comfort level and use approaches that are accessible and engaging. This may include chatting, play therapy, craft and artwork, games, storytelling, grounding and breathing techniques, Lego construction – anything which helps the child or young person to feel safe and comfortable. When ready, we will explore the areas that are causing them distress or thoughts and feelings they can’t understand. These methods often help young people express themselves better when putting thoughts and feelings into words is difficult.
In the first session, I carry out an age-appropriate assessment to build a clear picture of their well-being and any support they may need. This isn’t a diagnosis; it’s simply a way of helping me understand what’s going on for them so I can work safely and effectively with the young person. Throughout the process, I work collaboratively with parents or carers, keeping communication open while always respecting the young person’s privacy and boundaries.
For safeguarding reasons, children and young people must be brought to their session by a responsible adult who stays in the waiting area throughout. This ensures their safety and provides a supportive structure around the work we do together. I do not offer Walk-and-Talk Therapy or online sessions to children and young people under 18 years old.
